For years, SCCM (now part of Microsoft Configuration Manager) was the undisputed king of endpoint management. But Intune, the cloud-native solution, has grown up fast. So, what’s the right move in 2026?
The short answer: It’s not “vs.” anymore, it’s “and.” The bridge between them is Co-Management.
Where Each One Shines
SCCM (ConfigMgr) Strengths:
- Deep On-Prem Control: Unmatched power for managing on-prem servers.
- Complex Task Sequences: Still the gold standard for intricate bare-metal OS deployments.
- Massive Software Delivery: Highly efficient at complex app packaging with dependencies and detection logic (like AutoCAD) across your internal network.
- Deep inventory and custom reporting (esp. for on-prem sites)
Intune Strengths:
- Cloud-Native: Manages devices anywhere they have internet. Perfect for remote/hybrid work.
- Zero Trust & Security: Integrates directly with Conditional Access (“Is this device compliant?”).
- Windows Autopilot: The modern, “zero-touch” deployment method.
- Simple app lifecycle for modern apps: Integrates directly with app stores and default repositories.
- Policy-as-code approaches and scalable deployment rings: Easy and efficient setup policies and assignments.
- Cross-Platform: The single pane of glass for managing Windows, macOS, iOS, and Android.
So, Do You Need Both?
- If you are a new, cloud-first company: You can likely start (and stay) Intune-only.
- If you are a large, established enterprise (like most): You have a huge investment in SCCM. The answer is Co-Management.
Co-management lets you attach your existing SCCM environment to the Intune cloud. You can then choose which workloads to move, one by one, at your own pace.
Bridge Patterns (Use These Today)
- Co-management: Move workloads (Compliance, Resource access, Windows Update, Endpoint Protection, Applications) over time.
- Tenant Attach: Real-time actions from Intune for ConfigMgr devices.
- Cloud Management Gateway: Manage Internet clients without VPN.
Transition Strategy
- Inventory & Rationalize: Classify apps and policies (modernize candidates first).
- Shift Workloads: Start with Compliance and Endpoint Protection to unify posture.
- Pilot Autopilot: New devices cloud-provisioned; keep TS for niche rebuilds.
- De-risk: Keep OSD for specialized cases while scaling modern management.
My Take
Start moving workloads to Intune today. Things like Compliance Policies, Windows Updates, and Endpoint Protection are easy wins. You may keep SCCM for 5+ more years for its heavy-lifting capabilities, but the “brain” of your management plane—the intelligence and security—belongs in the cloud with Intune.
